Travel Can Be A Nightmare With A Fear of Flying

Whether it’s a business trip, personal trip or a holiday, flying is the fastest way to reach your long distance destination.  Yet for many with a fear of flying, it can bring about immense stress, anxiety, panic and worry as soon as the flights are booked.

The months, weeks, days leading up to the flight can be terrifying in anticipation that very soon you will be on that airplane and you can’t open the door mid-flight if you feel the need to escape.  Just the very thought of being in the air, in an enclosed space, unable to get out, and then of course what if it crashes or there’s really bad turbulence?  All those thoughts in your head, coupled with the movies you are running in your mind of being unable to escape, panicking, unable to breathe, plus your feelings of anxiety, nervousness or fear; no wonder you have a fear of flying!  If I didn’t know how to dissociate myself from what I’ve just written, I’m sure I’d give myself a fear of flying too! (Linzi had a fear of flying but now she happily travels around the world!)

Switch Off That Nightmare and Start Living The Dream!

The good news is that a fear of Flying is not something you were born with and have to be stuck with for the rest of your life.  It is something that you’ve either learnt, or, created in your mind as a result of a previously encoding traumatic event (which may or may not be associated with flying).

The brain learns fast meaning it can change fast too.  If we find ourselves trapped in a situation, which has a personal attachment or meaning, fearful for our life, and, the state of our brain chemistry is permissive or vulnerable at that moment in time (ie, we might be over-tired, stressed or unwell), then all of these conditions lead us to encoding amygdala based traumas, resulting in fears and phobias.

It doesn’t always have to be first hand too.  We can encode a fear or phobia by witnessing something traumatic or hearing/reading about it.  The brain stores this crucial survival response and then applies the same or similar emotions of fear, or terror, or panic to future events or experiences that generally match.  So instead of being scared of just one specific airplane at a specific airport on a specific day, the brain generalises and presents the fear across all airplanes, all airports, any day of the week!  The more you think about your fear, the more you are reinforcing it.

Are any of these familiar to you?

  • Claustrophobia / Feeling Trapped / Unable to Escape
  • Fear of Dying
  • Fear of not being in Control
  • Fear of Heights
  • Fear of Terrorist Attacks
  • Fear of Illness
  • Other Fears?

So as you can see, it’s not just about the ‘fear of flying’ in a airplane.    If you are also experiencing stress or anxiety in your life, your mind is already in a vulnerable state and all of these add up to making flying a nightmare.  This is why it is so important to be able to clear the associated and attached fears to really make the difference.

How Do I Learn To Enjoy Flying, or Just Be More Relaxed?

By being able to clear the underlying cause(s) / trigger(s) behind your fear of flying, we create space in your mind for you to learn how to begin to enjoy flying.  Through our research and working with clients, we know the importance of discovering exactly how you are doing the fear (whether it’s consciously or unconsciously or both) and how this first began.  Only then do we go about making the right changes, plus, you’ll gain an invaluable set of skills that you can apply in all areas of your life too.

Some clients know exactly how their fear started.  Others have no idea at all.   Sometimes clients develop a fear after enjoying years of flying (we’ve even had private pilots see us for help) and this causes much frustration and confusion as to why this has happened.   Many people have had to make their return journey home by train because they simply couldn’t get on the plane, even though they made it through the outward journey.  Alcohol, medication or avoidance are quite common to try and alleviate the fear, but wouldn’t you feel better knowing there is a better way to get rid of that fear yourself, with our help, and that you can look forwards to travelling in a calmer, more relaxed state of mind?

What happens when you see or hear media footage of airplane disasters?  What if you could detach yourself from this with a more resilient mind where your brain observes at a distance and doesn’t store the emotional elements (the intense fear or panic, the need to escape)?

Is This The Same as a Fear of Flying Course?

What we do is different to the Fear of Flying Courses offered by the commercial airlines.  You see, trying to help a group of fearful flyers means that they have to be generic in their delivery. They will explain the mechanics and safety statistics of flying and provide some relaxation techniques, but as we know, for most fearful flyers this makes no difference to removing their fear.  This is because each individual’s fear is personal to them.  Each and everyone of us has a different brain landscape (chemical state) based on our upbringing, our environment, our development, our beliefs, state of health, personal traumas, levels of stress and so on.  This is key to making change(s).

We’ve learnt how the brain encodes fear and how we can release the fear.   If you’re willing to let go of your fear of flying, get in touch and let’s have a conversation about how we can work together, using NLP, Hypnotherapy and The Havening Techniques®.  The sooner you do this, the sooner you’ll begin to relax and focus your time and energy on more important things……
