How Does Havening Work?

The key to The Havening Techniques®, is the Havening Touch®, which is a firm, slow movement on specifically researched areas across on your arms, palms and face.  This generates Delta waves and causes a powerful change in brain chemistry believed to de-link or detach the emotion from the memory, craving or distressing thought.

It appears to be a very simple process, but years of research show how this process has the ability to make a powerful biological change in the brain, whilst the client remains in a ‘safe haven’ throughout.   It’s incredibly comfortable, therapeutic and naturally relaxing.

Is Havening Just One Technique?

The Havening Techniques® allows us to work with a more reliable toolkit than ever before for clearing past traumas and distress.  There are many elements of Havening, including:

  • Event Havening
  • Transpirational Havening
  • Affirmational Havening
  • Outcome Havening
  • Role Havening
  • Self Havening
  • Iffirmational Havening
  • and others.

Why See A Certified Havening Techniques® Practitioner?

A Certified Havening Techniques® Practitioner is skilled at working with clients at an experienced level and is able to find out the core elements of where the stress/trauma lies and is able to manage any possible abreactions.

If you are uncomfortable with the Havening Touch® by a practitioner, you can Self-Haven during the Havening session. You will probably find many Havening videos on the internet and whilst some of these will be demonstrated correctly, many are not.   Self-Havening can be very effective, however, if you are unsure what to do or aren’t getting the results you want, it is recommended that you see a qualified Certified Havening Practitioner.

Only those who have been fully trained by The Rudens’ themselves or by Approved Havening Techniques® Trainers (listed on the Havening website) will know how each of these sub-methods work, so for your own peace of mind, always ensure you check the qualifications of anyone offering The Havening Techniques®.  All qualifications are signed by Dr Ruden.

If in doubt, check the Havening website for practitioner and trainer profiles.

Here's What Clients Say About My Havening Treatments*

Is Havening The Same As TFT or EFT or EMDR?

The Havening Techniques are not to be confused with EFT or TFT which are based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and use tapping on various meridian points.  Havening is a powerful biologically engineered therapy and produces more rapid response and less distress for the client.  There is no tapping involved.  Most clients do not believe that Havening will work and are astonished when it does.

Because Havening doesn’t require the client to discuss the content of the issues, trauma or distressing memory, the client feels more comfortable too.

We've answered some of the most frequently asked questions about Havening Techniques below:

  • Havening Techniques

  • The Meaden Method

  • Logistics

How long does it take for Havening to work?

Havening Techniques can produce results in varying timeframes, depending on the individual and the specific issues being addressed. Some clients may experience relief almost immediately during their first session. Each session typically lasts between 60 to 120 minutes, and the number of sessions required can vary based on personal response and the complexity of the issue. If a client has a complex psychological disorder, additional sessions may be recommended.

Is Havening good for anxiety?

Yes, Havening Techniques are highly effective in managing and treating anxiety. This approach is designed to alter the brain's response to stress and anxiety-producing stimuli, helping to reduce the physiological and emotional impact. Clients often report significant reductions in their anxiety levels and an improved ability to cope with stressors after undergoing Havening.

What is the science behind Havening?

The science behind Havening Techniques is rooted in neuroscience and revolves around the concept of "depotentiation" of the amygdala, the part of the brain that regulates emotional responses including fear and anxiety. Havening involves tactile input (touch) that generates delta waves in the brain. These waves help to reduce or remove the emotional pain associated with traumatic memories, effectively "depotentiating" the amygdala and diminishing the distressing feelings linked to those memories.

Is Havening the same as tapping?

No, Havening is not the same as tapping. While both techniques are used to address psychological distress, they differ in method and theory. Tapping, or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body to release energy blockages that are believed to cause emotional distress. Havening, on the other hand, uses therapeutic touch to elicit brain waves that lead to healing and emotional relief. Both techniques have their unique applications and benefits, but they operate on different principles.

Which mental health symptoms can Havening help to improve?

Havening Techniques are particularly effective in improving symptoms associated with a range of mental health issues, including psychological disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). By targeting the roots of both our psyche and traumatic memory, Havening can help alleviate the distress caused by these conditions.

This therapeutic approach is designed to modify the neural pathways associated with traumatic memories, thereby reducing the emotional impact and helping to restore mental well-being. Clients dealing with psychological disorders often experience significant relief in symptoms related to anxiety, fear, and chronic stress, making Havening a valuable tool in the management and treatment of various mental health issues.

Are the Havening Techniques easy to learn?

Yes, the Havening Techniques are relatively easy to learn for individuals looking for an effective therapeutic tool to manage psychological disorders or to cope with past severe trauma. While the fundamental principles of Havening—centred on sensory input and psychological healing—can be grasped in initial sessions with a trained therapist, mastering the technique for self-application may require practice and guidance. Many find that learning Havening is a valuable skill for self-care and as an alternative therapy.

Are the Havening Techniques dangerous?

Havening Techniques are generally considered safe and are not known to be dangerous when applied correctly under the guidance of a certified Havening therapy practitioner. However, as with any therapy involving severe trauma, it’s crucial to approach Havening with care. In cases of deep-seated psychological disorders or intense trauma, Havening should be conducted by professionals who can provide a safe environment and handle any intense emotional reactions that might arise. This ensures that Havening remains a supportive and beneficial experience for the recipient.
